The Short Story of a Pig...
Posted 7/29/2010 3:55:45 AM

Fantastic discovery: generate traffic with a self advertising sploder!

Nothing lost nothing gained was the thought (thank you btw Quirina for buying the pig for me!), of we set it up… and in under 3 hrs we went from an average of 10 visitors per day to… 107.

Too bad our little piggy sploder not only broke the bank (lost some money on setup errors… it happens, no worries there) but als broke the sim, resulting in the club disappearing in oblivion by a shitload of freeloaders (might sound negative, but we love everybody who visits the club!!!!!!)

I’m sorry to say that our sim isn’t strong enough to hold a fantastic thing like this, we’ll have to find other ways to get the name out…

PS: this is a copy paste from my club blog on Wordpress, so I'll add the pic and link to the piggy later.

A club owners' afterthought

Contests of the "Best in" variety... a blessing in disguise?

I was always worried about this type of "crowd pulling" as you seem to put more money in then what you get out of it. Yes, the crowds flock to contests like flies to a freshly deposited piece of cow dung - be honest, who doesn't like a bit of free Lindens! - but the flip side of this seemingly golden medal is one of Cost & Gain. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is a numbers game: will a contest actually make money?

Like most clubs we live of the generous donations made by our patrons, and like most clubs we like to give something back for that: DJ's playing music said patrons like, a nice place to hang out in... and yes, the occasional contest. A consideration I have tried to make is the effective value of a contest: do the "contest runners" stick around, or are they just coming for the free hand-me-out? Are these contest going to fill up the tipjar of DJ, host and club?

Last night I did my first contest in Khon Howlers - not the first one done there, DJ Jorn owns our contest board and swears by them - and I've got mixed feeling about it: I had a break even night. All in all succesful considering the season's slowness most clubs are enduring. Yes, we tagged two newcomers, but will they return? Only time will tell... So I'm leaning towards "yes" on the contest premise... but I don't like it!

Is a club giving away Lindens a better club then others? Shouldn't the feel and music of the club be more important? Don't staff make or break a club? Why is advertising not enough to pull in the crowd? Is word of mouth not a better way to go?

Yes, Second Life finance is a big part of the game, but when people start putting REAL MONEY into a game to give it away... then there is something wrong. If a club wants to be successful and known it has to give away free money. This club owner still has a lot of doubt about this, and will have to make his own decision about it.

Massive failure...
Posted 7/16/2010 5:49:44 AM

By Jove... An Idea! Make a freebie T-Shirt in the club, with Khon Howlers logo on it, as a "jacket" so I don't need to toss out my lowrider jeans...

All in all much easier said then done. First of all I tried just uploading my logo as a transparant .png file... too freaking big... Tried adjusting in-world... not available...

Google to the rescue! first of all I needed a template... found a couple of free ones, so I downloaded them. A minor Eureka moment happened, of course we're talking a 3D model, so I needed a wireframe to make the logo...

Planted the logo on the right spot on a chest, making the background transparant, and an other "eureka moment" (or so I thought) hit me. I took a black "new shirt" to test, uploaded the newly made shirt in .png again and put the texture on my avi... much to my surprise the transparant stuff on the image also goes transparant on my avi... good to know if I ever decide to make a tattoo... but this is usesless now. Lucky I uploaded these tests as temporary images, making this venture free!

So I started wondering if there is such a thing as a template of a completed T-shirt (with bottom for the jacket part) for sale on XstreetSL and low and behold: yes there are! But bloody hell, they are f****ing expensive!

Guess I'll have to give the T-shirt idea a little rest until I get some more Lindens in the bank.

What a weekend!
Posted 7/12/2010 5:56:25 AM

It has been a nice long amazing weekend for me. Met awesome people, had a great time, laughs, heartwarming stories, pixelshoulders for comfort... and a sh*tload of money going to Cancer Research!

Yes, this weekend SL bikers joined forces in raising funds for Relay for Life during the 2nd Annual Biker LAPaPALOOZA event. 10+ sims opened up their tracks, bikers got on a board, pledging to to a number of laps and looked for sponsors. During the whole weekend a bunch of DJ's played the most awesome tunes, there were live bands, bikini bike washes, auctions, and a lot more of activities.

I spend most of my time on the Sweet Destiny Sim helping out where I could (yes, not only ladies washed bikes :-) ), and did something like 190+ laps. this combined with DJ'ing two long sets in my club... tips were donated to the cause. I've never felt so good being flatbroke in SL :-D

At the end all the proceeds of sponsored laps were tallied... and we raised an amazing amount of money: well over 1 million lindens! (I'm looking for a confirmed total, but I've seen the great amount of L$ 1,180,847 already posted!)

Me personally would like to thank everybody that worked their asses off getting this thing working smoothly! YOU know who YOU are...

Regards,
- Sven Hyx
